What a school bus tracking app gives parents

For parents · · 3 min read

Every morning starts with the same worries: has the bus come? Did my child get on? Will anyone tell me if it is late? Here is what a school bus tracking app does for parents, morning and afternoon, and what to ask your school if it does not have one yet.

Before the bus arrives

The app shows your child's bus on a live map while the tour is running, with the stop it is at now and when it is expected at yours. About 500 m before your stop, your phone gets a notification. That is the moment to step outside, instead of standing in the street in the cold or the heat guessing.

The parent app: each child with their bus, and one button to report an absence.

At the stop

When your child boards, you get a notification. When the bus reaches the school, another. In the afternoon the same happens in reverse: boarded at school, dropped off at your stop. The escort records each of these at the stop, so the school has the same record you do.

When your child stays home

Report the absence in the app with one tap. The driver's list updates before the bus leaves, your stop is skipped, and nobody has to call the office at 6:40. If plans change, the absence can be undone until the bus has started its tour.

When the pickup place changes

Children are not always collected from home. A grandmother's house on Tuesdays, a club after school, a different address in the afternoon. The app lets a family set alternate places for given days, for the morning and for the afternoon separately, so the route reflects your week rather than a form filled in September.

If something goes wrong

The driver and the escort have a one-tap SOS that sends the bus's live location to the school, which follows the incident until it is closed and can send a replacement bus. You would hear from the school, with the facts, rather than from a group chat.

What the app does not do

It does not track your child, only the bus they are assigned to, and only while a tour is running. The location comes from the school's own staff phones, not from a device on your child. The school decides which notifications are switched on, and which parents see the live map.

Getting the app

Schooliy is on the App Store and Google Play, in Arabic and English. You sign in with the account your school gives you, and all your children at that school appear on one screen, each with their bus. If you are also a teacher at the same school, both accounts can live on one phone and you switch between them without signing out.

Questions

Can I see the bus all day?

You see it while a tour your child is on is running. Between tours the map is quiet, which is as it should be.

I have two children on different buses. Does the app handle that?

Yes. Each child has their own card with their own bus, stop and notifications.

My school does not use a system like this. What can I do?

Ask them. Show them this page, or send them to schooliy.com. Schools adopt it fastest when parents ask for it.
